The Sela Pass is a high altitude mountain pass located at a distance of 78 km from Tawang
between the towns of Bomdila
and Jung. It connects Tawang town to Tezpur
. Sela Pass has an elevation of 13,800 feet. Sela Pass is located between
the towns of Bomdila and Jung. Winter is severely cold in the place.
During winter temperature in the pass can go down to -10 degrees.
The Sela Pass is the most visited place in Arunachal Pradesh. According to legend an Indian soldier, Mahavir Chakra Jaswant Singh Rawat fought a lone battle against the Chinese during the 1962 war. His spirit is believed to protect the pass. Sela Pass is a paradise of nature. The climate in the Pass is windy and misty with no tress but thin grass. Sela Pass gets heavy snow during winter. Snow-covered areas around the pass and the snow clad mountains around gives tourists a breath taking experience. The pass remains open throughout the year.
According to legend a sepoy named Jaswant fought a lone battle against the Chinese during the 1962 war. His spirit is believed to protect the pass. A tribal woman used to bring him supplies and food during this period. She killed herself seeing the dead body of Jaswant.
Sela Pass is a paradise of nature. The mountain range has ethereal beauty. It is windy and misty up at Sela. There are no trees and the grass cover is thin. Sela Pass gets heavy snow during winter. A view of the snow-clad mountain is a wonder to the eyes. The snow-covered area around the pass gives the tourists a breath taking experience.
Sela Pass is special to the Buddhists. The Buddhists believe that there are about 101 lakes in and around the pass. These lakes are revered to the Buddhists. The Himalayan views of the pass are unsurpassed. The pass is open throughout the year. During landslide and heavy snow the pass is shut down temporarily. Tawang district lies in close proximity to China and is also the main rout to access Tawang, the BRO tries to keep the pass open throughout the year.
How to reach
Tawang is situated at a distance of 78 km from Sela Pass and Guwahati is situated 340 km from the place. There are state transport buses to Bomdila or Dirang from Guwahati. Cab or jeep facilities are available to reach the place.
