Arunachal Pradesh Administration

The Government of Arunachal Pradesh works on the same lines as the other states of the country. The state follows a unicameral system of government i.e. it has only one house – the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly which consists of 60 members. Like all other states of India, the head of the state is the Governor, appointed by the President of India. The state of Arunachal Pradesh is governed by a Chief Minister and a council of other ministers responsible to an elected unicameral legislature and by a Governor. The Chief Minister is the head of government and is vested with most of the executive powers. The role of Governor is largely ceremonial.

Arunachal map

The political history of Arunachal Pradesh dates back to 1975 when it was made a Union Territory (UT) with a separate Legislative Assembly and for this purpose a Lt. Governor was appointed as the head of the UT. Later on in 1987, Arunachal Pradesh was made a full fledged state with 60 members in the state legislative assembly. Since its formation there have been four times general assemblies in the state.

There are 60 seats in the state legislative assembly of which 59 are reserved for ST candidates and 1 for general. Arunachal Pradesh has 2 seats in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of Indian Parliament) and 1 seat in the Rajya Sabha (upper house). The Gauhati High Court has the jurisdiction in the state. The capital of the state is Itanagar.
